This is a sponsored post on behalf of the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation grant program. As always, the opinions are my own.
Here’s the pile of medical bills I paid the last week. Not included? The enormous bill that we owe our local children’s hospital for a couple of emergency room visits, two MRI’s and lots of doctors appointments from the beginning of the year. It’s sitting on my desk glaring at me because I can’t afford to pay it right now and to tell you the truth, we are blessed that our hospital is understanding and allows us to make payments (we’re not as lucky with other providers).
My family is not alone. Having a chronically ill child is expensive. And, while I’m glad we have insurance and it covered over a million dollars of claims last year, there is still a lot we have to pay for out-of-pocket. Adding to the expense are all kinds of other variables that you don’t think about like lost wages during hospital stays and all the things that insurance winds up not covering. Yes, there are surprises (check out last year’s pile of EOB’s)
While it’s scary to have a sick child, it can be terrifying to see the bills mount up and worry about how you’re going to pay them. That’s why I was thrilled to learn that UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation has a grant program. It was created to help families just like mine.
The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation is committed to helping children and families in need. Currently, they’ve awarded 13,000 grants to cover medical expenses and plan to award 20,000 by the year 2020. Grants are awarded based on financial need and the application process is simple. Over 89% of qualified, completed medical grant applications are approved. The only catch? Your child has to be sixteen or under and be covered by commercial health insurance. Grant money is paid directly to the health care provider. If you’d like to see what’s involved in the process or want to apply for a grant, click here.
If you’ve followed our story, you know that I’m not only passionate about getting the best healthcare I can for my teen, I think it’s important to help as many people as possible. Sadly, many parents of sick kids don’t know how to navigate the medical system or understand insurance. They don’t know where to go for help. Even I wasn’t aware of the UHCCF Grant program. That’s why I think it’s important that we share this post with as many people as possible to bring awareness. That’s why I’m giving away a $50 Amazon gift card for sharing.

What a great program! I wish there were more out there like this, so many people are overwhelmed with medical bills. It only takes one unexpected injury or illness to turn your world upside down.

Medical bills are the number one reason people file for bankruptcy. So sad.

This is such an amazing program for families. No family should have to worry about if they can afford their children’s medical bills when deciding treatment.
