A couple of years ago, our dance team stayed in town for dance nationals. In an attempt to make it feel like vacation, I asked my teen and her friends to plan a week of fun things. Believe it or not, a trip to Chuck E. Cheese’s was on the list so they could play games.
Last week, we were invited to the grand re-opening of the Northland Chuck E. Cheese’s. Since I wasn’t sure if it would still be hot on my teen’s list, I invited a friend to tag along with younger kids (in an interesting twist, her hubby wound up to be the most excited of all). The Kansas City restaurants were remodeled recently by San Francisco-based design firm, Tesser, to update the look and make them more parent friendly. We were about to see if this one lived up to it’s promises.
We were welcomed by an updated exterior and greeted by a sign talking about their Sensory Sunday program to accommodate children with special needs (that in itself, if a win in my book). The entry way is modern with self-service kiosks to be able to order food quickly. Of course, all the kids wanted to do is play games and Chuck E. Cheese’s has updated that process as well. Instead of loud tokens, each kid is now given an electronic play pass that they scan. Awesome.
While we waited for our pizza, everyone ran off in different directions to try out the games. First thing I noticed? Not as much noise as our visits in the past. That in itself will appeal to parents. The design of the place is appealing as well. It has warm wood and neutral colors. More inviting than the old decor.
Chuck E. Cheese’s has always been known for it’s pizza (which is delicious, I have to say) but they have a big salad bar, sandwiches and appetizers as well. As always, they have deals to earn credits to play games and tickets for prizes. There are lots of choices for mom and dad and plenty to keep the kids busy. And, if you’re daring, you can even order a pizza with Cheeto’s.
Another improvement? Instead of the animatronic show that they used to have, there is a live show every hour on a new light-up dance floor. It’s right next to the Birthday Zone that has seating for large parties and is now away from the regular seating for families.
As a parent of a teen, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by all the improvements. It’s no longer noisy and it felt more tailored to an entire family experience. My daughter felt the same way as well. Did it pass the little kid test? I definitely think so.
If you have a renovated location in your town, you’ll definitely want to check it out. Be sure to check out Chuck E. Cheese’s on their social media channels as well. Here’s their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

My daughter has been BEGGING us to take her to a Chuck E Cheese, lol. Our closest one is an hour away, but I am loving all of these updates! This is not the Chuck E Cheese I took my now 19 year old son to. 😉

Ohhh Wonder if our local one got renovated?! I’d Love to take my kids one more time before they feel like they’re too old for it. Wasn’t a good situation a few years ago when we went =\ BUT if it’s improved it’d be worth checking out!
