I get asked a lot- why dance? Of all the things your kid could do, why is dance your sport of choice? Well, here are our top ten reasons in no particular order.
Solid listening skills– If you can’t follow directions, you have no chance of surviving a four-year old ballet class. Years later, it’s a valuable skill when choreography is thrown at you. These kids can really hear what you’re saying- both in English and French. And, they even understand crazy dance terms like “Bam” and “Pow.”
Amazing exercise– What else can you do that works every muscle in your body? Dance isn’t for the weak. Just sit through a master class where the kids spend a good hour conditioning. It’s not for wimps.
Discipline– To be great at anything it takes thousands of hours and these kids head to the studio day in and out with no complaints. You’ve all seen the “I Can’t. I have Dance” shirts? There’s a little truth to that but it’s rewarding to see these kids when they nail their quad for the first time after years of work.
Confidence– It takes a lot of gumption to get on a stage with bright lights in your face and dance your heart out in front of hundreds of people you don’t know. Sometimes, it takes just as much to cross the floor after you’ve learned a new skill. Believing in yourself, is such a gift that comes from dance. Yes, you may fail, but it will be a successful one.
Creativity– When Rosie was little, when she wasn’t dancing, she was creating. Now that she’s older, there are lots of videos. All of this comes from consistent right brain stimulation.
Learning to be your personal best– Not everyone’s a star and we can’t win all the time. Dancers strive for their personal best- they work to improve themselves both mentally and physically. It’s amazing to be in an environment where the kid that hits a double for the first time gets just as much praise as the one with eight turns.
Time management– Ever tried to balance two hours of homework and four hours of dance? Our kids do all the time and they get it done and get good grades. Understanding priorities and fitting everything in is such an important life skill.
Spontaneity– As any dance mom can attest, you have to be ready for your child to pirouette, leap and yes, sometimes even twerk any time and any where. Dancers just can’t help themselves and it’s a beautiful thing to witness- especially when they belt into song at the same time.
Positive body image– We dance with girls of all shapes and sizes and all of them are confident in their skin. Dancers know they can’t all have the perfect ballerina body, so as time goes on they shift their interests towards a complimentary style.
Lots of laughter– There’s so much joy in the studio. These kids really enjoy their sport, the instructors and the rest of their teammates. They clap for each other at rehearsals, cheer for each other on stage and truly treat each other like family.
What did I miss ladies? What makes dance an amazing sport for your kids?
