We’ve all had a bully in our lives. I’ve never had a conversation with anyone (including the girl that bullied me from kindergarten through high school) that didn’t feel picked on at one point. Unfortunately, my kid is being picked on a little too much for my liking and it’s starting to piss me off.
DISCLAIMER: I try really hard not to share any information that would embarrass or irritate my teen. So, I usually write in sweeping generalities. Well, guess what? The party’s over. This Mama is mad.
So, yesterday I volunteered to help set up for our middle school dance team’s Spring show (for some that may sound like a little slice of hell. I actually like my dance mom duties). I ran home during the rehearsal to grab a couple of things and when I arrived back, there was Rosie looking a little upset.
“Hey Mama,” she implored. “Do you have my duet costume?”
“Um, no,” I said confused. “I packed it in your bag.”
That’s when she looked at me with her big blue eyes watering and said, “I know. I put it there with all my stuff for a quick change and now it’s gone!” And, then she started crying hysterically.
I was flabbergasted. Confused. And,very, very angry. So, I stormed over to the dance team coach to see how she planned to handle the situation. Obviously, it was another dance team member because there was no one else around. And, I had a crying teenager on my hands. She got a little piece of my mind (I say little because I can swear like a sailor when I’m pissed. I had to censor myself as I spoke.)
Long story short, the costume showed up. I found it as I was leaving (I wasn’t doing my kid any favors. Maybe she’d calm down if I wasn’t around) outside the back door where it was thrown when the bully figured out they may get caught. Rosie put a smile back on her face and the rehearsal went on. But, me? I’m still mad.
We can’t be sure who took the costume, but we have a pretty good idea. And, I do know a thing or two about a bully. They just can’t stop. For some reason, it’s a thrill to treat other people like shit. So, here’s my hope: Go ahead. Continue to pick on my kid. Eventually you’ll trip up and do something really stupid at school and get caught. Personally, I hope it’s bad enough that you get suspended and you get what you deserve. Rant over.
How do you teach your kids to deal with a bully?
