This year’s Alex’s Lemonade Days event is Friday June 12- Sunday, June 14. I was not compensated for this post (except for warm fuzzies) and all the opinions are mine. #Lemonade Days
There is nothing more scary to a parent than the word “cancer.” I found that out eighteen months ago when my teen had a cancer scare that fortunately turned out to be just a serious hip injury. But, nearly 12,500 children each year are not as lucky. Alexandra “Alex” Scott was one of them. To learn more about childhood cancer, click here.
Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma just before her first birthday. When she was four, she decided she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to help other children with cancer. Sadly, she passed away in 2004, however her legacy lives on.
The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $60 million and has funded over 275 research projects due to the support of people just like me and you. It’s a simple concept that all kids love- hold a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to charity. And, it’s easy to get started. All you have to do is go to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand site to Alex’s Lemonade Days and they’ll send you everything you need. This is an awesome way to teach kids about cancer, giving back to the community and about money at the same time!
Last year we picked an incredibly windy day, we held ours for our neighborhood in the backyard. However, you’ll want to pick a highly visible place (in fact, if you choose a park or recreational area for yours, you can get a Certificate of Insurance if needed). Once you get your spot, you’ll need to sit down with your kids and set realistic goals. Then you’ll want to be sure to advertise your stand in your neighborhood and on social media (be sure to use the hashtag: #LemonadeDays and @AlexsLemonade). The kit is filled with all kinds of promotional and educational material from balloons to posters and hand-outs.
If you’re interested to hold a stand, you don’t have to wait until the first weekend in June. You can hold one any time and anywhere. All you have to do is visit the Alex’s Lemonade Stand site to get started. What are you waiting for?
