Losing weight over 40 is hard. That’s why I was pleased when my friends at Beets Blu offered me a Bluetooth scale to review. As always, the opinions are my own.
So, I have to confess. I’m almost 50 and I swear that I’m starting to go through menopause, however the title losing weight over 40 sounded so much better. Why? That’s the age where lots of women start to struggle. Why? Your metabolism slows, hormone levels change and as everyone knows some of that fat becomes stubborn.
My problem with weight is that I’m often stuck at home with my teen, so I have to find motivation every single day to eat right and exercise. It’s so easy not too. While I’ve never been a big person to weigh myself (and lots of diet plans tell you not to at first), I have to have some psychological incentive to push myself. That’s where the Beets Blu Scale comes in.
More than a regular scale, it syncs with your phone through an easily downloadable app and tracks your progress over the past week and month. It also tracks water intake, body fat and muscle mass, all important when your trying to shed some weight. It’s easy to use and so much more accurate than the crappy scales I had in my bathroom. It’s worth every penny.
More tips to losing weight over 40
Hydrate– I gave up all caffeinated beverages years ago except for one cup of coffee so I’m staying hydrated and not drinking empty calories (okay that’s a lie. I am still drinking wine). How much water do you need? Eight glasses a day.
Eat smaller meals– Instead of three big meals, try five or six smaller ones (or big snacks) to keep your metabolism going. Also, don’t skip breakfast.
Add more color to your diet– Give up the carbs and add some more color to your meals. Veggies are not only good for you nutritionally, they can fill you up. I try and stay away from corn, carrots and potatoes. However, I’m not giving up sweet potatoes, they’re great for a good night’s sleep.
Shop the perimeter of the store– Stay away from all the processed crap in the center of the store. It’s laden with calories and God knows what else!
Get moving– Cardio is so important for heart health. I try to get at least 30 minutes a day and get my heart rate in the zone to lose weight (I have a Beets Blu monitor for that too). I also try to park as far away from the grocery store as I can so I get some extra steps.
Build muscle– This is the key to everything. If you can’t get to a gym, go buy a cheap set of resistance bands. The more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn.
Get a good night’s rest– Nothing messes with your weight and your hormones more than no sleep. Set a sleep schedule and stick to it.

I believe that you need to be consistent and committed to your plan. The results will not be as immediate as they once were but they will come. Over activity leads to injury and frustration.
Ugh, why can’t it just be slept off 😉
