School is now in session. While some of you just kissed your kids for their first day yesterday, we’ve been back for almost three weeks. I’ve done a lot of posts about how to prep for back to school time, but never a “now what?” post. You’re now in the middle of the first quarter, what do you need to know?
Meet the teachers– I don’t care if your child is five or almost sixteen like mine, it helps to know who they’re spending so much quality time with every day. And, if yours ever gets sick like mine, it helps to have a friendly face on your side.
Schedule homework– Last week, I saw a wonderful post with a schedule for homework and thought, “Boy, that was brilliant!” I wish I had done that years ago. Think how disciplined my teen would be. Also, make sure they have all the things they need to do their homework, including glasses.
Set expectations for extracurricular activities– School work comes first and is the priority at our home. Dance has to come second. Make sure your kids know your expectations.
Be sure your child is set up for success– Check in with them a couple weeks in and make sure they have everything they need to get great grades. If they need extra supplies, a tutor or are having trouble seeing the PowerPoint at the front of the room, you need to know.
Speaking of trouble seeing, this is an issue we have at the top of every school year and honestly, it’s been difficult for us to get a handle on a correct prescription. One year, Rosie’s near-sighted, the next far-sighted and then this year, we had a few months of blurry vision after a lumbar puncture. Finally, after three Ophthalmologist visits, we left with a correct one and headed to get glasses.
Buying glasses with a teen can be a little tricky because they’re picky. JC Penney Optical had a huge selection of trendy frames that my teen loved and they fit her face (we’re still in kids glasses). We have a store right here in Kansas City, but you’re not out of luck if you don’t. There’s a huge selection online of trendy frames with virtual try-on.
I’ve worn glasses since I was a kid and I was just as thrilled as my teen to see the variety of frames. These from Arizona, were by far one of our favorites. They’re girly but not too girly, if you know what we mean. And, they were priced right. Glasses can be expensive and you know my girl had to have more than one pair.
Right now, JC Penney Optical is having it’s back to School Sale! One pair for $39.99 plus free eyeglass protection plan (to protect against kids just being kids). It’s for kids sixteen and under so we just snuck in on the deal. Since they have all the trendiest frames and a six month warranty that protects against breakage, prescription changes, scratches and coatings for kids sixteen and under, you need to check it out!

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry she had such trouble getting the right prescription! Everyone but my youngest in our family wears glasses/contacts and it definitely takes the right ophthalmologist to get it right. Love those frames on her!

I remember when I found out that I needed glasses. I was in the 3rd grade and sitting near the back of the room when my teacher asked me to read something off a huge flip chart she had at the front of the room. I couldn’t see it. And we didn’t have such cute and fashionable options for glasses back in the 80’s either, lol. 😉
