Thanks to my friends at United Healthcare for hosting the We Dare you to Share campaign and for facilitating today’s discussion. As always, the opinions are my own.
How much do you know about your health insurance? If you’re like most people, not much. You probably use it once a year for a well-woman visit and a mammogram and when your kids are sick. But what would happen if you had someone in your family get sick and you needed to know what was covered and how to navigate your benefits. Could you do it? I can tell you from being in the insurance business for years (I’m not any more), that most people can’t.
That’s why United Healthcare created the We Dare you to Share Campaign.
I know a lot about our health insurance; not because I want to, because I have to. We have a chronically ill teenager. So, each year when enrollment time comes around, we have to look at plans carefully to make sure that they meet our needs. First, we have to check and see that all of our daughter’s doctors and our local children’s hospital are in-network (Super important. Last year we took an ambulance ride that wasn’t covered). Then, we have to make sure they’ll pay for all of Rosie’s medications. Finally, we have to look at the deductible and out-of-pocket maximums for all of us to make a decision. Did I lose you?
If you’re like most people, you may have no idea what I just said. That’s why United Healthcare created the We Dare you to Share campaign to make sure that people take control of their health. This month’s dares focus on taking control of your health care. There are three dares in February: Test your Smarts asks questions about health benefits, See and Sound Off asks your opinions after you watch a health video and Concentration is a health terminology matching game. Play all three to test your knowledge, learn a little more and win prizes.
Yes, there are prizes for playing along and you don’t have to be a United Healthcare customer. Each week there’s a $25 pre-paid card winner per dare and at the end of the month three lucky (and probably well-educated) winners win $400 pre-paid gift cards. Just for taking a small step to a healthier life.
Here’s the deal. You don’t want to learn all about health insurance when you need to, you want to learn about it now before you do, right? And, you like to win prizes. So, what are you waiting for? Head on over the We Dare you to Share site and start playing!
Now I feel like I need to go back and take a better look at my health insurance. I really don’t know much about what they offer.
Probably a good idea. You don’t want to be surprised if you have to take a trip to the ER and it’s not covered.

Unfortunately, we also have had to become hyper-educated over the years on health insurance and all the lovely red tape. It’s a lot of work, but it saves you thousands in the long-run and gives you the freedom to go where you need to go and see whom you need to see. Great post!

We have to be really careful when enrollment comes around each year too because we have lots of health needs.

I have learned a lot about medical insurance since my husband has a lot of medical issues. It can be expensive.

Thank you for this article, I’m not really giving too much thought to health insurance – it’s more like a necessary evil. I’m saying that because public (mandatory and paid by your company if you’re hired) healthcare in my country sucks, and I ended up paying for a private visit to get things done on time anyway. For some time I have a private health insurance plan – I never had to use its services and I hope I won’t have to!
This is a great reminder that I should look more into our health care insurance. I learned so much from this post.

When we came from the UK to live in the USA it was a bit of shock finding health care and costs, and different types as everything is free in the UK. Really hoping that this gets rectified in the USA as people are suffering (physically, mentally and financially) because they can’t afford care!
Thanks so much for the reminder to look further into what our insurance covers!

Most people don’t really think about their health insurance coverage until they need it, but it’s important to be prepared. Thanks for sharing this challenge.
I am a person that NEVER goes to the doctor for anything. Seriously, unless maybe I’m dying, I just don’t go. However, after having my daughter, I made sure to do plenty of research on different insurance plans so I could get the best coverage for her.
When you have kids, you have to do your due diligence. Don’t want any expensive surprises.

It’s amazing how the older we get the more concerned we are about health insurance life insurance etc. Thanks for sharing, even though I have insurance I like to read and learn what other policies have to offer.
